The oldest active arena in the U.S. is set to close, marking the end of more than 100 years of hockey history

A SIGNIFICANT SPACE IN hockey history will soon disappear. In May 2024, Northeastern University in Boston made public its plans to tear down Matthews Arena, the oldest active hockey rink in the United States. The arena is located near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Huntington Avenue in downtown Boston, and the St. Botolph Street building hosts the Northeastern men’s and women’s hockey teams as well as its men’s basketball team. It is the oldest Div. I venue for both basketball and hockey. The rink opened in 1910 as Boston Arena, a municipally-owned, multi-purpose indoor venue that seated roughly 5,000 spectators.
