BY STEVE MACFARLANE PREDICTION | 6TH IN PACIFIC NOBODY IS EXPECTING TOO much from the Flames this season. That’s what happens when you trade away your top center and half of your starting defenders mid-season, then deal your starting goalie before the draft. They may call it a retool, but it’s more aligned with a full rebuild. Gone are Jacob Markstrom, Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane, Noah Hanifin, Nikita Zadorov and Chris Tanev. Flames GM Craig Conroy was cautious in free agency as well, bringing in reclamation project Anthony Mantha as the top acquisition. Playoffs? Anything is possible, but they’re unlikely. The prospect cupboard is full, however, after a 10-player draft chock-full of solid prospects. Top pick Zayne Parekh will get a long look in camp. The future is the focus.
