When I was a child, my mum used to let me watch pretty much whatever I wanted on the box. On my own, I would watch the standards of any ’80s boyhood: The Dukes of Hazzard, The A-Team, The Professionals and Dick Turpin. Action men fighting on Saturday tea-time telly was as traditional as Sunday roast back then. But in the evenings my mum would let me stay up and watch whatever she was into at the time. I say, “let me stay up”. My mother is narcoleptic which meant that she would start watching something, fall asleep half an hour in and remain spark out through my notional bedtime.
