The costumery at the Royal Opera House creates and conserves thousands of outfits every year. Expert needleworkers refurbish historic tutus to fit the latest ballet dancers and the on-site dye studio ensures fabrics are the perfect shade. From the emerald-green gem-encrusted waistcoats used in Balanchine’s Jewels to the meringue dress made for Laurent Pelly’s version of Massenet’s opera Cinderella, the costumiers work across a diverse range of productions. Until recently, the closest the team had got to anything medical was providing fake blood for use on stage. But since the London venue is currently closed due to the coronavirus crisis, members of the costume department have been making PPE for local NHS trusts and charitable groups across the country.
