was arguably the biggest UK news story of 2018. And it has eerie parallels with recent events, with an invisible killer threatening the residents of the Wiltshire city, which subsequently went into lockdown.
A city going into lockdown was, back then, unprecedented. Two people – the intended target of a political assassination, ex-Russian military officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia – almost died from exposure to the nerve agent Novichok in May.
Gradually, a story of Cold War-style political intrigue unravelled, in which bungling spies claimed to be cathedral lovers (if they really were, they should have done a Dominic Cummings and gone to Durham) and the town of Salisbury had to shut its doors and stay alert as police, intelligence officers, scientists and politicians scrambled for clues.
