PORTUGAL’S ALGARVE coast has been a tourist haven for many years, but its Douro River is one of Europe’s less travelled regions – and one reason why it’s a good time to go there now. A leisurely seven days’ cruising between World Heritage-listed Porto and tiny Barca d’Alva, on the Spanish border, opens up a world of spectacular scenery, medieval towns, palaces and gardens, not to mention lashings of port- and wine-tastings en route. We spent two days in Porto, Portugal’s second largest city, which sits at the mouth of the Douro. Our ship, AmaVida, was docked at Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from the unbelievably picturesque “old city” on the northern bank.
