The first time I had the ‘triangle of youth’ explained by a dermatologist, it fell on deaf ears, as I was a few months shy of my 25th birthday. Put simply, the doctor explained to little me that a youthful face is made up of three attributes: high cheekbones, full cheeks and (“most importantly,” she said) a well-defined jawline. As we age, the triangle inverts. Fast-forward 20 years, and I can see this as plainly as the jowls on my face. “Our face shape changes as we lose collagen and elastin, our facial soft tissue drops and there is bone resorption,” says Dr Shyamalar Gunatheesan, founding dermatologist of ODE Dermatology in Melbourne.
