Husband likes to cook. He likes to tell everybody he’s cooking and tell everybody he cooked, starting his sentences post-event with “When I cooked dinner on Tuesday night …” I swear he pauses the conversation here, leaving sufficient space for platitudes and applause. I bet he’s miffed he hasn’t been nominated for Australian Of The Year.
It’s an event, too. The meal might be simple, but the process he goes through from produce to plate is nothing short of a spectacle. I’ve discussed his behaviour with some friends who assure me their partners are exactly the same, causing me to write this column. I’ve found that talking through these problems makes us all feel better, more united, less alone in our suffering, dismay and confusion.
