After actor and campaigner Samuel Johnson was struck by a car last year, his big sister, Hilde Hinton, swung into action, caring for him through a tough recovery and completing her second book along the way.

“Hilde’s the lynchpin of our family and I’ve always idolised her.” When the phone call came that Saturday night last June, Hilde Hinton remembers going cold, then “shattering into a thousand pieces”. Her brother and “best buddy”, actor Samuel Johnson, had been hit by a car, and it didn’t look good. Driving to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, Hilde saw a convoy of police and ambulance vehicles wailing down Punt Road with Sam inside, and followed him to Emergency.
