RISK VS REWARD

The line between reality and fantasy seems to be getting thinner and thinner. I realized this while playing the newest version of Forza on an Xbox One gaming system. The experience of “driving” the virtual car was so realistic. Where I was playing had the whole control deal, too, with an actual racing seat and force-feedback steering wheel. Even the pedal arrangement and shifter (paddle shifters) felt right and the physics of how the pixelated car responded were realistic. Hit a rumble strip and you could feel it through the steering wheel. AN IMPALA THAT COULD OUTRUN A JAGUAR

At the time, Gurney was in the thick of his Formula 1 career. He believed that the Impala SS, with just a few choice modifications, could successfully take on the Jaguar sedans competing in British saloon races of the time—saloon being the British word for sedan and not some pub crawl. This was the first year Chevrolet offered the 409 in the Imp—rated at 360 hp and 409 lb-ft of torque using a single four-barrel carburetor— and for the most part it was left alone. Local high-performance guru Bill Thomas and Bill Fowler just tore the engine down, inspected it, returned all clearances to stock spec, and then reinstalled it in front of the car’s aluminum four-speed gearbox. “Even the jets in the stock four-barrel carburetor were left untouched,” wrote…

VEGALICIOUS

The Chevy Vega is an underutilized platform that has a lot of performance possibilities. Sure, in stock, grocerygetter form it’s nothing to write home about, but its diminutive size makes for a car with a lot of handling potential. These facts weren’t lost on David Carroll, who decided that it would be the perfect jumping off point for a badass Pro Touring project. Of course, he first needed a clean starter car. As David told us, “The Vega was located in Laramie, Wyoming, and was completely rust free. Over the years, Shawn Steeber has had the pleasure of owning a pleasant array of classic muscle cars, including a Mustang, a Camaro, a ’56 Chevy, a Ranchero, and a 1965 two-door Nova. THAT LITTLE RED CORVETTE

Each of the cars we’ve featured thus far from the 2016 Falken Tire Super Chevy Muscle Car Challenge has been a true muscle car. Camaros and Chevelles have dominated the festivities and we haven’t shown you any of Chevrolet’s true sports car: the Corvette. Until now, that is. Jane Thurmond’s 1964 Corvette (named Scarlett) is a true work of art. As the owner of the lone Corvette to participate in the Challenge, Thurmond had her work cut out for her. FORCE MULTIPLICATION

Last time, we took a look at the new 540-inch big-block Chevy combination from BluePrint Engines (BPE). In addition to offering plenty of displacement, the big-block stroker was designed specifically for use with power-adders, meaning boost or nitrous (or both). We started things off by uncrating the 540 and immediately subjecting it to a dyno session. After a few break-in cycles, the 540 was run in anger in naturally aspirated trim to the tune of 649 hp at 6,100 rpm and 629 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Satisfied it was now ready for the first of many power-adders, we installed a Zex Perimeter Plate nitrous system. Run with 250hp jetting, the 540 big-block responded with 937 hp and 891 lb-ft of torque. It is amazing how effective the combination…

HEAT EXCHANGE

Daily driving an old car can quickly expose problem areas. If the car is bone stock, you’ll begin to appreciate the engineering that General Motors put into its cars. The true survivors, like our 1964 Chevelle, are typically dependable, despite some predictable issues with the points ignition system, cooling system, and pesky items like crankcase ventilation. Our Chevelle project still has the original 283ci small-block, topped with a two-barrel carburetor; but what it lacks in horsepower it makes up for with dependability. Our wheezy 283-powered Chevelle certainly marks its territory with oil and sometimes transmission fluid on extended stays in the garage. There’s very little about this hobby that could be considered inexpensive, but one of the biggest outlays of cash can be buying the initial project car. Of course, the cost of the car is directly proportional to the popularity of what you choose and its overall condition. Want to start with a rust-free and super-clean 1969 Camaro RS? Well then, the opening salvo of cash is going to be huge. SUNSHINE STATE OF MIND

For the second stop of its extended 2017 summer show season, the Original Super Chevy Show rolled into Palm Beach International Raceway in Jupiter, Florida, for two days of racing and showing off. Friday was set up for drag racing test-and-tune runs. Saturday was set up for the main event. Like all Super Chevy events, this deal had something for everyone. For those that run their cars hard there was nearly non-stop drag racing where hundreds of Chevypowered rides fought it out for a slice of the sizable prize money pie and the accompanying bragging rights.
