GO DARKER
Instead of sticking to white woodwork, turn skirting and trims into a feature by painting them a darker shade, such as dark grey or black. Using a paler colour on the largest surface area (such as walls and ceiling) and a darker tone on woodwork will make the walls appear lighter and elongate the room. Try taking the colour up and around door frames, too.
