This week, Britain will begin to take its first, controlled steps out of the lockdown that has been in place across the country for the last two months. BASC RESPOND TO BLOCK ON ‘ESSENTIAL’ PEST CONTROL

BASC is urging the police to be consistent in the Covid-19 advice given to the shooting community amid reports that some forces have blocked essential fox control during the lambing season. Government guidance says anyone can conduct essential pest control to protect crops or livestock with the landowner’s permission. However some BASC members have been warned not to undertake pest control by their local police force unless it is their ‘profession’. BASC believes that regional variances in police advice is damaging efforts to keep the countryside working during the lockdown. Shoots around the country have debating how many birds to put down, how many days to offer and whether to shoot at all. Some shooters have suggested that the game season would effectively be cancelled in 2020-21. Game farmers first expressed concern over the situation as shoots would typically be placing their orders for the season throughout April. The Game Farmers’ Association said: “The day after the UK lockdown game shoots were thinking hard but calmly about the implications for the 2020-2021 season. Game farms had experienced some cancelled or reduced orders but most will carry on with rearing pheasants and partridges this year. BASC has announced it is holding subscriptions at the level set in 2020 until at least March 2022 in response to the coronavirus crisis. BASC chief executive Ian Bell said: “We know that many members will be facing financial challenges in the months ahead. A decision on subscription levels is usually taken in the autumn. But we felt it was important to bring that forward and move quickly to put the usual increase on hold while our members are having to face so much uncertainty. “Shooting faces many tough challenges, and BASC is only as strong as the membership. An exclusive Future survey conducted by Gun Trade News has found that the firearms industry is feeling positive about the future. Firstly, the industry seems to be getting the support it needs from the government. All the businesses who had closed down temporarily had also applied for government assistance, with the majority reporting that getting hold of it had been straightforward. Secondly, and even more encouragingly, 55 per cent of respondents who had closed thought they would be back open within a month or two, with the vast majority of them feeling that although there was some grounds for concern, they would survive. The Countryside Alliance has produced a document calling for the phased introduction of shooting as lockdown restrictions are eased. The report argues that normal shooting activities should resume as soon as it is safe to do so. The eight-page dossier has already been submitted to the government and suggests that shoots go ahead while still adhering to rules regarding social distancing and essential travel. It is often said that the real work begins after you squeeze the trigger; in the case of deer this can be very true. There are some words of wisdom that every hunter should think of before the shot (I rarely remember these until after the shot!). “You shoot it, you drag it” is a well known phrase and makes it fairly clear what the consequences of your actions will be. In researching this subject, I have revisited my old British Deer Society course notes. These started with an excellent safety lecture. I still have the transcript of this which opens with emphasis on the vital importance of safety in stalking. The lecture introduced various points such as the danger of faulty equipment, ammunition issues, rifle handling and of course shooting. Although there are no doubt still some unqualified, uncertified deerstalkers, I cannot recommend too strongly the benefits of attending a few courses. Learning about safety in stalking of course only starts in the classroom but it’s a great start in an activity in which one mistake is too many. Classroom knowledge helps the novice stalker to avoid getting safety wrong before they have a bank of experience to help them.…

The roe rut: for someone like me who spends most of his time either hunting or monitoring this magical deer, it’s an eagerly awaited time of year. It can be frustrating – in that little happens that we see, the weather seems to stop the rut in its tracks, or it’s too hot during the day and most of the activity takes place under cover of darkness when it’s cooler. As the country’s lockdown continues, I find myself wondering what effect Covid-19 will have on our deer populations and it has brought me to what I think are some interesting conclusions. Firstly, let’s consider what the deer are doing while we are all stuck indoors. Well, for the most part, they are carrying on as normal and doing what deer do; eating, sorting out territories and sex groups and, as always, the muntjac are breeding! What all of this means for us is that we see damage to things such as agricultural crops, growing timber and native flora. Over the many years that I’ve been shooting, one make of rifle seems to have been ever present and that’s the Czech firm CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka or Czech Armoury). We’re going on a bear hunt

The last couple of hours we have been spotting at a larger cutting block in the forest. Before we sat down, we found fresh excrement on the trail that runs through the clearing. From the amount and the size of it, this could be a big black bear, and that is exasctly what Jens Kjaer Knudsen hopes to find on this trip. There are a total of six outfitted concessions on Vancouver Island, which has the densest herd of black bears worldwide. An estimated 12,000 bears live there, which means there is a bear approximately every three square kilometres. The concession we were hunting covers 300 square kilometres. Every year between 35 and 40 black bears are killed here. The black bear on Vancouver Island can not be hunted by artificial light or with bait. The number of bears shot is regulated by a licensing system where the state distributes licenses between state-hired regulators, indigineous people, local hunters and the six outfitters. The .338 Lapua has been on the go since 1982 and is famed for its use in conflict. Indeed, the .338 Lapua was used by British military personnel to set the world sniper record, with two confirmed kills at a range of 2,475 metres in 2009. The .338 Lapua began as a request by the US military to develop the first long-range rifle cartridge solely for military target shooting; previously, snipers had used modified hunting rifle cartridges. With the lambs on most of my sheep farms now large enough not to be easily taken by foxes, my shooting partner Gary and I can now breathe a cautious sigh of relief. It’s been another busy year with close to 200 foxes falling to our rifles over the past four months and this year we have only lost a small number of lambs over all the farms we look after. No doubt the use of better night vision, thermal and other equipment has helped us to take a slightly larger number of foxes this year over previous years. August Roland von Spieß

Col. August Roland Von Spieß was born in Austro-Hungary on 6 August 1864 and died in Romania in 1953. He became a Romanian citizen after the Union of Transylvania with Romania, following the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. Formally known as Oberst (colonel) August Roland von Braccioforte zum Portner und Höflein, he was an army officer, writer, famous hunter and prestigious hunting master for the Romanian royal court. He was married to Auguste Herbert; their daughter was the ornithologist Silvia Stein Spieß (1901-1993). In 1875, at 11 years old, he entered the military school of Sankt Pölten, after which he joined the Theresian Military Academy of Wiener Neustadt, Vienna.
