When Stuart Broad, the fast bowler, starts his run-up to bowl at Lord’s, he begins the process of launching a leather sphere from his right hand at about 85mph, towards the opposition’s batsman waiting about 20 yards away. The batsman has less than a second to decide what to do and, in this example, is rather late in deciding to duck under the ‘bouncer’, which strikes him on the helmet. The leather sphere decelerates to close to stationary in an inch or two of movement. The batsman looks rather startled and somewhat uncomfortable having just encountered the effects of kinetic energy.
