One of the first things I learned about history as a kid was that the Romans always attempted to occupy the high ground. That way, not only would the enemy always have to attack uphill but the defenders would likewise have the advantage of being able to see what was going on. While the former issue is of no relevance to us, nothing has changed in the intervening 2,000 years as far as the tactical importance of having a good view goes. I always envy those who live in areas where there are wide glacial valleys, allowing you to see all the way from one side to the other. This is because where I live, between Dartmoor and Exmoor, the terrain provides visibility that usually varies between poor and terrible.…
