Marian Spain has been confirmed as the new chief executive of Natural England. She was recently appointed after taking the role on an interim basis in December 2018.
Her appointment is not without its critics, however, because of her role in the temporary revocation of the general licences in April last year. She was said to be vague about the purpose of the licences and how many people were involved in pest control when questioned by the parliamentary Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee. The revocation of the licences caused much confusion in the countryside and hindered pest control at a crucial time of the year before they were reinstated in June.
