The two main EFAs are the omega-6 and omega-3 families, with the former being more potent than the latter for skin integrity. Linoleic acid is an important omega-6, with deficiency causing dry skin and supplementation reducing water loss through the skin, especially when it is given with zinc. This reduction in water loss implies that the skin will act more effectively as a barrier.
