Is it better if a wildfowling dog runs-in on a shot bird to retrieve it more quickly in fast-flowing water? Tom says: No. I want my dogs to be steady in any situation for a number of reasons. Safety is paramount when wildfowling. Fast-flowing water or treacherous mud can be very hazardous for dogs. The last thing you want is a dog running full speed into danger without being able to stop it. Another reason why I prefer a dog to be steady is that opportunities to get a shot can be few and far between when wildfowling. A shot ringing out across the mud can spook birds, which can often present the chance of a shot, especially when decoying. These chances can be frustratingly missed if the dog has decided…
