Wild goose chase

OPENING SHOT Head start Peter Theobald and his shooting chums take aim at an unsuspecting greylag from their lie-down blinds bordering a field of barley stubble on Orkney. The Essex Boys Goose Shooting Club braved an unreasonably early start following a 14-hour journey by land and sea from the south-east of England to the first of the Northern Islands. The lone goose was soon joined by others flying about 100ft directly over the shooting party. Things did not all go entirely to plan as a gun malfunction meant Peter had to manage with only his top barrel. That said, it made little difference to a successful first morning and a bag big enough to encourage the lads for the rest of their adventure. Find out more on page 25…
