“In the early stages of making the film, we met with extraordinary resistance to the concept of playing whole songs,” says Bernard MacMahon. “People were just like, ‘No‑one’s going to be interested in that!’ But if you think that the story of this band is worth you sitting in a theatre for two hours, then I believe you’ve goddamn got to play a whole lot of that music.
