An Airport with a Future, and a Past

Fifty years hence, history may look back and note that Pendleton played an important role in the development of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), leading to their full integration into the National Airspace System (NAS) and the aviation industry. However, this high-desert airfield has already secured a place for itself in posterity. Initially constructed as a small municipal airport, the likelihood that the United States would enter World War II prompted its expansion in early 1941. Over six months, the Army Corps of Engineers added two runways as well as facilities for 2,500 personnel. In June, the 17th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Corps was transferred to Pendleton. Seven months later, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and the U.S. entered World War II. With enemy submarines…
