Il existe plusieurs sous-catégories du film de prison: le film de prison dans les îles (“Papillon”, “L’Evadé De L’Ile Du Diable”), le film de prison stallonesque (“Evasion”, “Haute Sécurité”) ou vandammnesque (“In Hell”, “Coups Pour Coups”), le film de prison dans l’espace (“Fortress”, “Lock Out”), le film de prison horrifico-gore (“Story Of Ricky”, “Beyond Reanimator”) et, nettement plus terre à terre, le film de prison de Guantanamo, le tristement célèbre centre de détention, ouvert à la va-vite sur une base navale américaine de Cuba après les attentats de septembre 2001. Le cinéma anti-Bush ne pouvait donc pas zapper l’horreur (voir “The Road To Guantanamo”, 2006), docudrama de Michael Winterbottom sur la descente aux enfers de quatre Anglo-Pakistanais enfermés durant deux ans et demi dans ce lieu sans espoir.
