One thing is more likely to lower our performance as riders than any other factor: the cold. Numb fingers that can’t feel the brakes aren’t the worst of it, as reaction time slows as we get cold. Even more worrying, our judgment gets worse the colder we get and we may take risks we normally wouldn’t.
The thing is, modern motorcycling kit mean there’s no need to suffer from the cold. With decent textiles, proper layers and the miracle of electricity, it’s perfectly possible to ride through the winter in comfort. Better still, advances in material technology have produced insulating layers that aren’t bulky so we can add warm garments for comfort without restricting movement.
