1 How does GoreTex work? There are two types of GoreTex: the Membrane, which is a layer inside a garment; and Laminate, which is the external material. Both work because they have microscopic holes that are small enough to let air in but not water molecules, so you can stay dry without getting sweaty. 2 Look after it If you don’t maintain GoreTex garments they won’t work properly because the microscopic holes that allow the material to be breathe will clog up. This means cleaning is essential. 3 Will I still need waterproofs? No: when correctly maintained, GoreTex material is 100% waterproof… but only if you remember to do up every zip and fastening properly. 4 Why is GoreTex so expensive? It’s a hi-tech, specialist material that’s expensive to produce and only a limited number of manufacturers…
