Before leather jackets turned brown and were worn in adverts by hipster models boasting manicured beards. Leathers are supposed to be sporty, functional and protective — a semi-fictional link to the flexible armour worn by the world’s fastest riders, not a fashion parade. But a jacket that’s just the top half of a race suit is pointless — I want a sports-touring jacket with pockets, comfort and warmth. And after 12 months and several thousands of miles, I reckon Dainese’s Avro D1 very nearly gets the balance perfectly right. On first glance the Avro looks racy, from its Batsuit-esque faux abs to the aluminium-covered shoulder protectors. But it’s not nearly as extreme as it seems —…
