1 ENGINE/GEARBOX Smooth as Barry White and tougher than Chuck Norris, the power plant is so under-stressed that it hardly ever gives trouble — 50,000 miles is a walk in the park. Regular oil changes are all it needs, along with careful carb or throttle-body balancing to avoid vibration. Valve clearances rarely need major attention, but do still need checking on time. There’s evidence that leaving the bike on the sidestand for long periods might cause extra valvetrain wear on cold starts as the oil drains away from the right hand end of the cams, so use the centrestand. The carbs on earlier models are beginning to cause problems, possibly related to ethanol in modern fuel.
