HOW DO YOU update the bike that has everything? By giving it more things. Until now the ‘TE’ version of an R1200GS or GS Adventure has come with all of BMW’s hi-tech options, like electronic suspension, tyre pressure monitors, quickshifter, heated grips and so on. TE doesn’t stand for ‘Ticked Everything’, though it should. But for 2018 there are two new pieces of technology that remain optional extras even on the range-topping TE: a full-colour TFT (thin-film transistor) digital dash (£595); and an ‘SOS’ emergency button (£295). You can have either the dash, or the dash and the SOS button, but not the button on its own — it needs the dash to function. And neither can be retrofitted to older GSs.
