Young hearts glow with the magic of the holidays
On Christmas Eve 1946, my brother and I were in bed. Our folks had put out all the gifts — from aunts, uncles, neighbors and Santa—and arranged them neatly under the tree before my mother and her friend left for midnight Mass. Dad, a sound sleeper, went to bed.
Larry was 3 and I was 6. At some point, one of us—probably me—woke up and decided to see if Santa Claus had come. He had! We both raced to the living room. Not being able to read at that age, we didn’t know what the gift tags said. We assumed they were all for us from Santa.
