Today’s hues are pared back compared with their predecessors. Where once an upbeat shade of fuchsia may have covered all four walls, an earthier, more romantic version of the colour now sits in its place – Farrow & Ball’s Sulking Room Pink, for example, became an instant modern classic when it launched in 2018. Zesty citrus shades have been dialled down – biscuity tones featuring dark pigments are the grown-up descendants of oranges and yellows. But we haven’t become any less bold – colour drenching, where an entire room is decorated in the same shade (ceiling, floor, furniture and all), is a new look that works because these more muted tones envelop the eye rather than overwhelm it.
