What is… Ectoin? A bit of an all-rounder, ectoine is a molecule that protects micro-organisms living in extreme conditions: deserts, deep seas, arctic ice. Ectoin is a synthetic version produced via fermentation; it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, can help to hydrate and repair, and protects against pollution and light. It appears in allergy-treating nasal sprays and eye drops, where it coats membranes with a protective coat of water.
