My favourite book as a child was… A Wizard Of Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin. When I was little, I really wanted to travel to magical lands with nothing but a dagger to protect me from evil. But then I was growing up in a small town in the East Midlands. The character I most relate to is… Sparrowhawk from the Earthsea books – or Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights perhaps, all that brooding. It was hard to find women characters who weren’t passive when I was growing up; maybe Lucy from the tales of Narnia. That’s why the Brontës were such geniuses – at least they gave us Cathy and Jane.
