The Fraud by Zadie Smith (Hamish Hamilton, £20, out 7th September) Based on real events, The Fraud is Smith’s first historical novel, as seen through the eyes of Eliza Touchet, the Victorian cousin and housekeeper of a famous novelist. But it’s also about the Tichborne Trial that captivated England and its star witness, Andrew Bogle, a former slave. A complex read full of big themes and rich historical detail, this is challenging at times, but a cracker. Swimming For Beginners by Nicola Gill (Bedford Square, £8.99, out 14th September) Loretta is pragmatic, practical and prefers not to deal with messy things, such as emotions and feelings. But when she meets six-year-old Phoebe at an airport and an unexpected tragedy brings them close together, Loretta’s safe, controlled life goes off the rails. Fans of Eleanor Oliphant…
