It’s an amazing 25 years since the first issue of Red hit newsstands. That feels no mean feat in a world where we are now much more likely to pick up our phones than a magazine.
Back in 1998, there was a gap in the market for a lifestyle title that spoke to women about more than just their wardrobes or homes. At the time, a new customer seemed to have emerged, too – dubbed ‘middle youth’ by Red’s launch editor, Kath Brown, they were described as ‘people who have acquired a fair share of responsibilities but still want to hold on to a youthful attitude to life’. They were the first generation to make post-40 still feel very much like post-20.
