America in the 1890s ushered in a new era of consumerism. As a result, marketing played a key role in influencing a generation of potential firearms customers. While there were many advertisements directed toward women for soap, detergent, and other household items, women also became a target of firearms manufacturers. Not only did companies create ads, albeit cringey by today’s standards, but they directed entire lines of guns to women. Notable was the Smith & Wesson Ladysmith. Smith & Wesson were a little later to the revolver market than Colt, thanks to a pesky patent Colt received in 1836.
