Stepping Off the Tenure Track

IN 2008, Kirsten Sundberg Lunstrum was living the dream of many young writers when, after publishing her second story collection, Swimming With Strangers (Chronicle Books), she landed a tenure-track job teaching creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase, about thirty-five miles north of New York City. Sundberg Lunstrum loved the position, but she was raising two small children and desperately missed her extended family in Seattle. Then, in late 2012, one of her children fell ill, and she and her husband uprooted their lives to be closer to family.
