AS WRITERS we often advise one another that the secret to “breaking out” or getting ahead is to seize every opportunity. In 2022 if you would have asked me about my twenty years in the literary world, I’d have chalked up any success to availability. “Say yes,” I remember telling people, “Say yes whenever you can.” As a teacher these activities make for great lines on your curriculum vitae. I was proud as my CV grew to ten pages, then fourteen. I was fortunate enough to score a visiting writer-in-residence position at the school where I got my MFA.
