WRITING a big project is like watching grass grow.
That it can be like watching grass grow is both metaphor and fact. When I’m working on something I truly care about, the blank page is a razed patch of soil. So many possibilities for starts that could grow well or go wrong. The space between the start of a project and seeing the fully established results involves a great deal of tedium and uncertainty, accompanied by self-conscious doubt. I have to trust that the seeds I plant will grow, though there may be no discernible evidence that what I hope for will manifest.
