Lots of minor upgrades make this one of the most versatile smart speakers around

PRICE £46 (£55 inc VAT) from amazon.co.uk Amazon’s fifth-generation Echo Dot looks exactly the same as the previous model: it’s basically a sphere with the bottom shaved off, in your choice of charcoal, white or deep blue colour schemes. The updated hardware has a few new tricks, however. For one, there’s a new tap sensor alongside the buttons up top: if you tap the top of the speaker, it now pauses a song, ends a call or snoozes an alarm. There’s no way of turning off the alarm through taps, but it’s a nice bonus if you use your Dot as a bedside alarm. Inside, a temperature sensor means you can now create routines that kick in when the temperatures goes above or below a certain threshold – a potentially powerful upgrade for smart-home…
