he problem with aphorisms is that T they can slip through the conscious mind undetected and burrow themselves into the part of the brain that internalises them as truth, unexamined. Take the phrase ‘only boring people get bored’. You have no doubt heard somebody say this. A dad, perhaps, or some smug blue tick media personality whose name you keep seeing on your timeline despite having no idea what they actually do for a living.
It is, of course, nonsense. It ignores the fact that when someone claims to be bored, it is rarely due to a lack of things to do. Even armed with easy, instant access to more cultural works than any other era of humanity, it is still possible to be bored, because ‘bored’ now also means…
