My Favorite Coins: An AG3-Graded Coin: 1913-S Barber Quarter

With the exception of the 1916-D dime in G4 condition, my favorite coins have generally been pieces in excellent condition, often in Mint State. In this column, I’m going to the other extreme, a coin in AG3. You’re probably asking yourself why I would like such a low-grade coin. I think you’ll understand when I tell you about my AG3 1913-S Barber quarter. If you’ve ever thought about collecting Barber quarters, you’ve quickly discovered that there are three key dates, all from the San Francisco mint. The three “big” keys are 1896-S (188,039 minted), 1901-S (72,664 minted), and 1913-S (40,000 minted). If you thought that the coins’ values were directly tied to their mintage, you would be wrong, as the 1901-S is worth considerably more than the lower-mintage 1913-S. The…
