Mary Kawena Pukui Featured on Native American Dollar

The U.S. Mint began releasing $1 coins for the Native American $1 Coin Program in 2009. Each year, the Mint releases a new coin with a common obverse of Sacagawea and changing reverse designs. This year, the dollar will feature Native Hawaiian scholar, author, composer and dancer Mary Kawena Pukui. Pukui worked as an ethnological assistant and translator. She published over 50 scholarly works and taught Hawaiian, helping to bridge the gap between older Native speakers and the younger generations who were growing up learning English. She worked to collect and share Hawaiian culture, sharing it with the world. Her preservation efforts are credited with helping the cultural renaissance in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
