The year 1916 ranks as one of the greatest years in the history of American coins. The dime, quarter, and half dollar all received design changes that year. Better still, the new designs were of extraordinary quality. Those designs were possibly the best designs those three denominations ever had. That alone makes 1916 a very special year. There is another reason 1916 is a special year for American coins and coin collectors. You might say that 1916 is the year of the rarity. The new 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar had a Philadelphia mintage of 608,000, a Denver mintage of 1,014,400, and a San Francisco mintage of 508,000.
