The Lincoln cent has a prominent place in United States numismatics. Many older collectors remember getting into the hobby by looking through hoards or rolls of these cents, much like newer collectors look through quarters today. Beyond this, there is a debate that has yet to be settled about the future of our humble one-cent coin. Some people, with some collectors included, think we should just phase it out and see how long the uncountable supply that already sits in coffee cans, ashtrays, and automobile cup holders can last, servicing everyday transactions. Other people are in favor of finding some less expensive material than the current zinc plated with copper and making one-cent coins from that – even if it is a heavy-duty type of plastic.
