Outside Influence on United States Coinage

For those of us who collect coins of the United States, the changes in designs and denominations made from time to time seem natural and merely economic in nature. Sometimes, this has been true, but it has also been the case that outside influences have created significant changes behind the scenes. In the early days of our coinage, economic matters were uppermost in the minds of Mint officials and Congress, but this situation was not destined to last. Not long after the War of 1812 ended in late 1814, gold coins of the United States were virtually never to be seen.
