Why do animals shed their fur?
Many mammals need thick fur to stay toasty in winter and thin fur to keep chill in summer. So sort of like you do when the seasons change, they switch up coats.
But instead of wearing a heavier or lighter jacket, animals shed their fur to make room for a new coat. Changes in the amount of sunlight in the fall and spring trigger the animal to lose old hair and grow a new coat that’s right for the season.
