1836-1854 Born in the East End of London in 1836, Elizabeth Garrett grew up in Aldeburgh, a small seaside town in Suffolk, where her father was a successful barley merchant. Elizabeth had lots of younger brothers and sisters, and she liked to give them evening lectures on the important issues of the day – like the fact that women in England were banned from lots of important jobs. Unfair! 1860 Women, for example, weren’t allowed to be doctors. But after meeting an English woman who had qualified as a doctor in the USA, Elizabeth decided she was going to change that.
