Bacterial blooms What can you see in these splodges? We reckon they resemble everything from paint splashes and food spills to piles of powder, jellyfish and mushrooms. But these colourful and richly-textured blobs each show colonies of bacteria. A collaboration between photographer Dr. Tim Cockerill and microbiologist Dr. Elze Hesse, the beautiful images show extreme close-ups of the bacteria found in both regular potting compost and soil contaminated with metals. The pair wanted to investigate how common soil bacteria act when grown alongside other bacteria, and how this growth is affected by toxic metals in the soil. The photos show the incredible diversity of forms that can emerge when bacteria grow in different conditions.…
