What is the best piece of advice that has helped your photography?
When I started out there was a friend who got me into photography, a chap called Dominique. We have a lot of snow and sunny weather, and exposure calculation can be hard. One day, he took me aside and said, “If you’re somewhere and you don’t know what to do, aim at the blue sky, expose and get your meter reading on that sky. Then take it down to the white snow – it’ll be the same.” It works! When I shot villas in Greece it was harsh sunlight crashing down and you couldn’t get it – is it 1/125 sec or 1/250 sec?
