THE IRON SHOE TRIATHLON

If you consider yourself an all-around hot-shoe driver, the organizers of the Triathlon of Motorsports have arranged a unique forum for you to prove your universal prowess. Twice a year (March and December), they throw down the gauntlet at the multi-purpose Las Vegas Speedway and challenge drivers to compete on the dragstrip, a 3/8th-mile oval, and road-racing circuit—all in the same event. Scoring is similar to a human triathlon: The times on all three courses are added together, and the lowest time wins. The event consists of two passes down the dragstrip (including reaction times) and four laps each on the road course and oval. All cars must run Department of Transportation-approved street tires and meet safety standards. Entrants range from street-legal street cars to full-on Formula race cars. For rules…
