RACING WITHOUT DRIVERS IN 1998 (We recently received an automotive magazine called Auto2010. It arrived in a smoking DeLorean, apparently from the not-so-distant future. One of the more interesting articles in it described the changes in racing technology in the two decades from 1990 to 2010. Of particular interest was the extinction of racing drivers, as excerpted below.) Well, it happened: The race-car driver is finally obsolete. Even if the international rulemakers try to preserve the species by banning electronic guidance in the ’98 season, it will always be known that engineers can build a better driver. In spite of what are essentially spec-car rules in IndyCar racing, the amazing string of wins established by the GM/Hughes/Penske team at the start of the ’97 season can now be understood.
