Cold. We were talking extreme cold. Minuses 60-degree-type cold, without the wind chill. And in our last tie-up-the-loose-ends stop before venturing off into the great, white North, we were trying to think of anything we’d overlooked in our preparations. We had heaters for the battery, engine block, transmission oil pan, and transfer cage. We’d stocked up on blue-coated extension cords because we knew the regular yellow ones shatter when the mercury drops into the nether regions. We reminded ourselves that the engine oil each morning would be the consistency of maple syrup, and if we used the parking brake, it could freeze in place.
